Opening Prayer
For God alone my soul in silence waits; from Him comes my Salvation. -Psalm 62:1 (Silent reflection) Prayer of the Bible Praise our God, O peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard; he has preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping. For you, O God, test us; and you refine us like silver. But God has surely listened and heard my voice in prayer. Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me! -Psalm 66:10-12, 19-20 (Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God) Confession of Sin Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. -The Jesus Prayer (5th Century) (Time of silence for confession of sin) The Words of Jesus “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. -Matthew 6:5-15 (Think deeply on these life-giving words of Jesus) Prayer for Ourselves and Others Blessed be God who hears me when I pray. -Psalm 28:6 (Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others) Closing Prayer O Lord my God, teach my heart this day where and how to see You, where and how to find You. Teach me to seek You, for I cannot seek You unless You teach me, or find You unless You show Yourself to me. Let me seek You in my desire, let me desire You in my seeking. Let me find You by loving You, let me love You when I find You. -Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) |
