Opening Prayer
The Lord’s unfailing love and mercy still continue, fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise. The Lord is all I have, and so in him I will put my hope. -Lamentations 3:22–24 (silent reflection) Prayer of the Bible Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! Selah Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. As they go through the Valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools. They go from strength to strength. -Psalm 84: 4-7 (Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God) Confession of Sin Lord, look at my soul’s wounds, your living and effective eye sees everything. It pierces like a sword, even to part asunder soul and spirit. Assuredly, my Lord, you see in my soul the traces of my former sins, my present perils, and also motives and occasions for others yet to be. You see those things, Lord, and I would have you see them. you know well, O Searcher of my heart, that there is nothing in my soul that I would hide from you, even had I the power to escape your eyes. My hope, most merciful, is in your lovingkindness; for you will see me, either as a good physician sees, intent upon my healing, or else as a kind master, anxious to correct, or a forbearing father, longing to forgive. -Saint Allred (1110-1167) (Time of silence for confession of sin) The Words of Jesus Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. -John 13: 16-17 (Think deeply on these life-giving words of Jesus) Prayers for Ourselves and Others Lord, help us to bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ -Galatians 6:2 (Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others) Closing Prayer Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. -Book of Common Prayer |
