DAILY PRAYER 167

Opening Prayer

I wait for you, O God, my soul waits and in your word I hope. My soul waits for you, O God, more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.
-Psalm 130:5-6

(silent reflection)

Prayer of the Bible
You, O Lord, Most Hight, are awesome, the great King over all the earth!  You are the King of all the earth, and I will sing your praise.  You reign over the nations; You are seated on Your holy throne
-Psalm 42: 2,7,8

(Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God)

Confession of Sin
Long my imprisoned spirit lay, fast bound by sin and nature’s night,
Thine eye dispersed a quickening ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light.
My chains fell off, my spirit free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
-Chalres Wesley (1707-1788)

(Time of silence for confession of sin)

The Words of Jesus
And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.  Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;  for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.  Then the disciples went back to their homes.
-John 20:5-10

(Think deeply on these life-giving words of Jesus)

Prayers for Ourselves and Others
This is the confidence we have in Jesus, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
 -1 John 5:15

(Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others)

Closing Prayer

Lord God, without your promise I could not endure this sorrow.
Only the promise of your presence enables me to carry on in these lonely times.
Only your grace preserves me as I mourn.  Do not let me mourn without hope!
You have taken care of me in the past, now let me be carried in your mercy.
Give me the grace to come to you, and find rest for my soul.
In Christ’s name.  Amen.
