Opening Prayer
Lord Jesus you are the light of the world. You promise to those who follow you, they will not walk in the darkness but will have the light of life. -John 8:12 (silent reflection) Prayer of the Bible The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion! Tell among the peoples his deeds! For he who avenges blood is mindful of them; he does not forget the cry of the afflicted. Be gracious to me, O Lord! See my affliction from those who hate me, O you who lift me up from the gates of death, that I may recount all your praises, that in the gates of the daughter of Zion I may rejoice in your salvation. -Psalm 9: 11-14 (Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God) Confession of Sin Let the water and the blood from Thy wounded side which flowed, be of sin the double cure, save from wrath and make me pure -Augustus M. Toplady, Hymn: Rock of Ages (Time of silence for confession of sin) The Words of Jesus Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.” -John 21: 18-19 (Think deeply on these life-giving words of Jesus) Prayers for Ourselves and Others O Christ of the poor and the yearning, kindle in my heart within a flame of love for my neighbor, for my foe, for my friend, for my kindred all. From the humblest thing that lives to the Name that is highest of all, kindle in my heart within a flame of love. -Prayer from Iona Community (Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others) Closing Prayer Oh God, the life and death of your son are our hope of salvation. Pour the refreshing waters of your love over us. Cleanse our hearts, forgive our failings, purify our desires and renew our passion for you. We ask this through Christ our Savior. For from him and through him and to him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen! -Romans 11:33, 36 |
