Opening Prayer
Thank you Lord that I can lie down in peace and sleep, for you alone, O Lord make me dwell in safety -Psalm 4:8 (silent reflection) Prayer of the Bible O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; many are saying of my soul, there is no salvation for him in God. Selah But you, O Lord, are a a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy hill. Selah I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around. Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God! -Psalm 3:1-7 (Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God) Confession of Sin I give God thanks for all that was good in the day that is ending. I ask God's mercy on my sins and omissions this day. I seek God's peace in my home and in all the world this night. Amen -Augustine of Hippo (354-430) (Time of silence for confession of sin) The Words of Jesus On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” -Mark 4:35-41 (Think deeply on these life-giving words of Jesus) Prayers for Ourselves and Others Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. -Jeremiah 29:12 (Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others) Closing Prayer Save us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping, that when we wake, we may watch with Christ, and when we sleep, we may rest in peace. Amen -Roman Catholic Breviary |
