Opening Prayer
Alone with none but thee, my God, I journey on my way. What need I fear, when thou art near O king of night and day? More safe am I within thy hand than if a host did round me stand. -St Columba (521-597) (silent reflection) Prayer of the Bible The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus; it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you. -Isaiah 35:1-5 (Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God) Confession of Sin Those whom You love, You rebuke and discipline. Therefore may I be zealous and repent. -Revelation 3:19 (Time of silence for confession of sin) The Words of Jesus The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region -Mark 5:14-17 (Think deeply on these life-giving words of Jesus) Prayers for Ourselves and Others They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. -Acts 2:42 (Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others) Closing Prayer O Holy Spirit of God, abide with us; inspire all our thoughts; pervade our imaginations; suggest all our decisions; order all our doings. Let the healing grace of your love, O Lord, so transform me that I may play my part in the transfiguration of the world from a place of suffering, death and corruption to a realm of infinite light, joy and love. Make me so obedient to your Spirit that my life may become a living prayer, and a witness to your unfailing presence. -Oxford Book of Prayer |
