Opening Prayer
Lord Jesus you are the light of the world. You promise to those who follow you, they will not walk in the darkness but will have the light of life. -John 8:12 (silent reflection) Prayer of the Bible I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me. I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin. But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully. Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good. Do not forsake me, O Lord! O my God, be not far from me! Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation! -Psalm 38: 17-22 (Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God) Confession of Sin Long my imprisoned spirit lay, fast bound by sin and nature’s night, Thine eye dispersed a quickening ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light. My chains fell off, my spirit free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee. -Chalres Wesley (1707-1788) (Time of silence for confession of sin) The Words of Jesus Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!” “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” -Mark 10:28-31 (Think deeply on the life and words of Jesus) Prayers for Ourselves and Others God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you in my prayers at all times …. -Romans 1:9-10 (Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others) Closing Prayer Almighty and ever-present Father, Your watchful care reaches from one end of the earth to the other. You order all things in such power that even tensions and tragedies of sin cannot frustrate Your loving plans. Help me to embrace Your will, and give me the strength to follow Your call, so that Your truth may live in my heart and reflect peace to those who believe in Your love. I ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen -Roman Sacramentary (20th c.) |
