Opening Prayer
When I am afraid, I will trust in you, O God, whose word I praise. In you I have put my trust. I will not fear; what can mere mortals do to me? -Psalm 56:3-4 (silent reflection) Prayer of the Bible “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the LORD. -Jeremiah 1:5-8 (Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God) Confession of Sin Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and give us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen -Book of Common Prayer (Time of silence for confession of sin) The Words of Jesus The disciples were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, -Mark 10:32 (Think deeply on the life and words of Jesus) Prayers for Ourselves and Others Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. -Colossians 4:2 (Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others) Closing Prayer Lord, I rejoice that nothing can come between me and your love, even when I feel alone or in difficulty, when in sickness or am troubled. Even if attacked or afraid, ‘no abyss of mine is so deep that your love is not deeper still’. Lord, you have experienced many hells of this world but descended so that you can lift us up. Be always near. -Corrie Ten Boon (1892-1983) |
