Opening Prayer
O Brother Jesus who wept at the death of a friend and overturned tables in anger at wrong let me not be frightened by the depths of passion. Rather let me learn the love and anger and wild expanses of soul within me that are true expressions of your grace and wisdom. And assure me again that in becoming more like you I come closer to my true self made in the image of outpouring love. -Celtic Prayer (silent reflection) Prayer of the Bible But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his anger the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation. Thus shall you say to them: “The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.” It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens. When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, -Jeremiah 10:10-13 (Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God) Confession of Sin May, I remove the places of idolatry from my life, and let my heart be fully committed to You all my days -2 Chronicles 15:17 (Time of silence for confession of sin) The Words of Jesus And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.” -Mark 11:15-17 (Think deeply on the life and words of Jesus) Prayers for Ourselves and Others Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests me made known to God. -Philippians. 4:6 (Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others) Closing Prayer O Lord, make it possible for me to accomplish with Your grace what is impossible for me by nature. You know the little I can bear and when some small trial comes my way I immediately fall apart. Make the bearing of trials something desirable and lovable to me, for suffering and affliction for Your name is beneficial to my soul. -Thomas a Kempis (1380-1471) |
