Opening Prayer
O Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your words are true, and you have promised good things to your servant -2 Samuel 7:28 (silent reflection) Prayer of the Bible I will tell of the kindnesses of the LORD, the deeds for which he is to be praised, according to all the LORD has done for us—yes, the many good things he has done for the house of Israel, according to his compassion and many kindnesses. He said, "Surely they are my people, sons who will not be false to me”; and so he became their Savior. -Isaiah 63:7-8 (Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God) Confession of Sin O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, everywhere present and filling all things, treasury of blessings and Giver of life: come and abide in us. Cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls. Amen -Eastern Orthodox Liturgy (Time of silence for confession of sin) The Words of Jesus And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. -Luke 4:16-22 (Think deeply on the life and words of Jesus) Prayers for Ourselves and Others Lord, help us to bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. -Galatians 6:2 (Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others) Closing Prayer Lord, be with me, and help me by Your Spirit, to perform all my duties to Your praise. I pray You be very near to us all; protect us by Your providential care over us, and above all, further visit us by Your love, power, and Spirit. Oh Lord! turn us, and we shall be turned; help us, and we shall be helped; keep us, and we shall be kept. Amen. -Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845) |
