Opening Prayer
You show me the path of life, O God. In your presence there is fullness of joy.’ -Psalm 16:11 (silent reflection) Prayer of the Bible O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! -Psalm 95:1-2 (Free expression of praise and thanksgiving to God) Confession of Sin I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. -Psalm 32:5 (Time of silence for confession of sin) The Words of Jesus And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. “Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. “Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.“Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets. “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic[b] either. Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. -Luke 6:20-31 (Think deeply on the life and words of Jesus) Prayers for Ourselves and Others Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. -Colossians 4:2 (Time to bring before God our own needs and the needs of others) Closing Prayer Like your disciples on the road to Emmaus, we are so often incapable of seeing that you, O Christ, are our companion on the way. But, when our eyes are opened, we realize that you were speaking to us, even though perhaps we had forgotten you. O Christ, you are always there: your love burns in our heart of hearts. -Brother Roger of Taize (1915-2005) |
