Matthew Henry
Matthew Henry (1662 – 1714) was born in 1662 in a Welsh farmhouse close to the border of England and Wales. A few weeks earlier, his father Philip Henry (1631-1696) had been ejected from his ministry in the Established Church. Along with nearly two thousand other ministers, Philip Henry had refused to submit to the Act of Uniformity, which had come into effect on 24 August 1662 and was radically opposed to all that Puritans like Henry stood for. He is best known for the six-volume biblical commentary Exposition of the Old and New Testaments. Quotes |
"The woman was made of a rib out of the side of Adam; not made out of his head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved."
-Matthew Henry “Peace is such a precious jewel that I would give anything for it but truth.” -Matthew Henry “If you take a book into your hands, be it 'God's book, or any other useful good book,' rely on God to make it profitable to you. Do not waste time reading unprofitable books. When you read, do so not out of vain curiosity but with love for God's kingdom, compassion for human beings, and the intent to turn what you learn into prayers and praises.” -Matthew Henry “To wait on God is to live a life of desire towards him, delight in him, dependence on him, and devotedness to him.” -Matthew Henry “When God intends great mercy for his people, he first of all sets them praying.” -Matthew Henry “When men drive God's word from them he justly permits their delusions, and answers them according to the multitude of their idols.” -Matthew Henry “All obedience begins in the affections, and nothing in religion is done right, that is not done there first.” -Matthew Henry “for those that would be kept from any sin must be careful to avoid all temptations to it, and every thing that looks towards it or leads to it.” -Matthew Henry “Though Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, yet not from the command of it,” -Matthew Henry |
